25 years. Today marks 25 years since September 11 25 years. Today marks 25 years since September 11, 2001—a day that changed our world and continues to shape it today. For some, the changes became part of everyday life. Taking your shoes off at airport security. New routines and precautions that eventually became normal. For others, that day was the beginning of a ripple that is still being felt. September 11 changed all of our lives, and in many ways, it is the catalyst for why we are here today doing this work. Dog Tag Buddies wouldn’t exist without the events of that day, the wars that followed, and the veterans who came home carrying wounds that aren’t always visible. But today also reminds us that ripples can move in another direction. When we help a veteran rebuild confidence, reconnect, and reclaim the ordinary moments that make life meaningful, that impact doesn’t stop with the veteran. It reaches their family, their friends, and communities across Montana. So today, we remember where we came from. We honor those whose lives were forever changed. We recognize the challenges veterans continue to carry. And we keep working to create ripples of hope for what comes next. We remember. We honor. We keep moving forward.
September carries two messages that are deeply con September carries two messages that are deeply connected to our work. It is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and National Service Dog Month. For Montana, suicide prevention is especially urgent. Our state has ranked among the top five in the nation for suicide rates for more than 40 years. Between 2011 and 2022, Montana’s overall suicide rate was nearly double the national rate—and Montana’s Veteran suicide rate remains significantly higher than the national Veteran rate. These aren’t simply statistics. They represent veterans, families, friends, and communities—and they are why our mission is rooted in making a difference. Service dogs can save lives. Not through magic. Not by working alone. And not as a replacement for professional care. They can interrupt, ground, alert, and provide support during difficult moments. But the impact of the partnership reaches far beyond the tasks a dog performs. For two years, veterans work alongside their dogs while building skills, strategies, confidence, connection, and purpose they can carry into everyday life—at home, at work, and in their communities. The dog learns. The veteran learns. And together, they build a partnership designed to help the veteran keep moving forward. Throughout September, we’ll share more about what that partnership looks like—and why sometimes the most important thing at the end of a leash isn’t the dog. Myth: A service dog "fixes" PTSD. Fact: A service Myth: A service dog "fixes" PTSD. Fact: A service dog doesn't eliminate post-traumatic stress. A highly trained psychiatric service dog is taught to recognize and interrupt specific symptoms, helping a veteran respond before those symptoms escalate. The milestone isn't the alert. The milestone is when the veteran recognizes that alert and uses the skills they've learned to continue moving forward.
